The story of downed WWII Soviet fighter pilot (and Hero of the Soviet Union) Alexiei Maresyev, who with both feet amputated because of frostbite returns to combat flying.
The author was practically everywhere during the war. Boris Polevoi parachuted several times into the enemy's rear, served in Stalingrad, was present at the capture of Paulus, wrote from Banska Bystrica during the Slovak uprising, landed in the first liaison plane in war-struck Prague, and witnessed the meeting of Allied troops on the Elbe and the capture of the Reichstag in Berlin. At the Nuremberg Trial Polevoi headed the group of Soviet journalists as a special Pravda correspondent.

I first read this book when I was a teenager. My father gave it to me. It was in Hebrew - translated from Russian . I recently purchased this book, the English translation, for my teenage son. Needles to say - he was amazed by it as well! It's based on a true story, about a pilot who looses both his feet in the war and his struggle to continue flying. It's very well written, even the translation (both in Hebrew and in English) flows and holds you. It inspires you, makes you believe that everything is possible if you really and truly want it, and if you're willing to work hard enough. The fact it's a true story helps you believe in it, of course....
One of the best books I've ever read - great for teenagers and for grown-ups as well.

A Story about a Real Man Paperback Boris Polevoi 9781849028639 Books Reviews
This my favorite book ever. I first read this when I was 11, and I might've read this about 30-40 times. This book has helped me to go through tough times and always has been an inspiration. After my book got lost, I painstakingly found the same edition I always loved. This is a must read. As an admirer of Soviet literature, I believe this is one of the best books of post WWII era.
Growing up in USSR, this book was widely known.
I must have read it at least 20 times in my childhood, and several more times when I was in my twenties.
Every time I read it, it's as if I have never read it before, I guess this is because with different age we perceive things differently and pay attention to different details.
This book is a must read for anyone in any age!
It is widely said that our utmost abilities, mental and physical, surface in extreme conditions. By definition, war is an extreme condition predicament. Let alone war in the frozen lands of the Russian (then Soviet) plains. One man and his will against all odds... The achievement and prevail of human spirit against life's little games.... Makes a man wonder when not to smile, when to complain, what to think as impossible. I guess impossible is just something we just don't want bad enough as Kazantzakis put it... Recommendable to all... Enjoy every page; I know I did...
The book is well written most probably if you are looking for a novel this wont tire you but I expected more historical facts.
This is an amazing survival story from the perspective of a Russian fighter pilot in WWII. It is very well written.
This is the review of the printing company not the book. This is one of the most amazing books ever written, but the printing format is horrendous. The format of the pages are twice as big as area of the page with the printed text, leaving 2 inches of margins all around the printed text.
I was always impressed by Alexey's story. Bought this book as a gift for an American friend who doesn't speak Russian, first read it myself to see if I would recognize the story when it is translated into English ) Have to say the interpreter did a great job. It is translated into hardcore British English, had to look up some words in a dictionary, but gets the story across very well, highly recommend this edition to anyone that wants to read a story about a real man.
